Difficult conversations

Hard conversation?
Find the right words.

When you need to answer clearly without sounding angrier, colder, harsher or more defensive than you actually mean to.

  • Your first reply is written and it is not the one to send.
  • Your second is so careful it says nothing.
  • The typing dots have started and stopped twice.

Or just SayThis.

SayThis writes the draft and puts it in your message box. You read it and you send it.

The moment

Say what you mean without saying something you will regret.

Hard messages are rarely hard because you do not know your own position. You know it. The risk is in the wording — that a fair point lands as an attack, that a boundary reads as a sulk, that an apology sounds like an excuse with an apology attached.

And the cost of getting it wrong is not embarrassment. It is another three days of this.

SayThis reads the thread — what was said, in what order, by whom — and writes one reply in the voice you choose. Not a therapist, not a script. A draft, in your message box, that you can change before anyone else sees it.

Eight of the hard ones

You have probably had one of these open today.

  • Someone is angry with you

“Anything I type right now is going to make this worse.”

I honestly cannot believe you did that without telling me.

    Calm
  • Setting a boundary

“I have to say no to this properly, once, and mean it.”

I will just drop in on my way past — around eight?

    Firm
  • Apologising and meaning it

“I was wrong. I do not want to grovel about it for six lines.”

You said you would be there. I waited an hour.

    Apologetic
  • Disagreeing without a fight

“I think they are wrong and I do not want a row about it.”

I think we both know whose fault this actually was.

    Direct
  • Saying that it hurt

“If I say nothing it happens again. If I say it badly it becomes the topic.”

It was a joke. You are being oversensitive about it.

    Empathetic
  • Saying no

“I want to say no without sounding rude.”

Any chance you can cover my shift Saturday?

    Warm
  • Clearing up a misunderstanding

“They have read something into this that was never in it.”

So you are saying it is on me then.

    Calm
  • Ending a conversation respectfully

“This is going in circles and somebody has to stop it.”

anyway. I have said what I think.

Same message, different tone

One sentence. Five relationships.

This is the section worth playing with. The message does not change — only the voice does, and every one of these is an honest answer to it. One tone at a time, the way the app works: picking a new one drops the last.

They said

Honestly I'm getting tired of always being the one reaching out.

A close friend, and they are not entirely wrong. What happens next depends almost entirely on your first sentence.

That is fair, and I would rather hear it than not. I have been bad at starting things lately — not because I care less. Can we sort out something for next week?

De-escalating, composed, and neutral.

In the thread

The boundary, in one message.

Firm says the thing once and does not negotiate with itself. That is what makes it short.

Saying no to the thing you always say yes to

The fourth Saturday in a row. You have already said yes three times.

FirmClear boundaries while remaining respectful.

It says no in the first six words, gives one reason rather than a defence, and leaves the door open. Nothing in it invites a negotiation.

And if you want to soften it without moving

Warm

I am going to have to say no to Saturday — I really need the weekend this time. I hope you find someone, and do ask me again.

I cannot do this Saturday — I need the weekend. I hope you get it covered, and ask me again another time.

Replies written for this page, not fixed output — SayThis writes to the conversation in front of it, so the same tone on your thread will read like your thread.

Your words. Your decision.

It drafts. You decide.

SayThis does not decide whether to forgive someone, whether the boundary is right, or whether this friendship survives the week. It has no opinion about any of that and it is not trying to have one.

What it does is put words to the position you already hold, in the voice you chose, and hand them to you. Too much? Shorter. Not it at all? Another. Wrong voice entirely? Change the tone and it rewrites the same point.

Then the draft sits in your message box until you send it. SayThis never sends anything itself.

When the conversation is hard, do not let the wording make it harder.

Say the thing you actually mean, in the voice you meant it in, before the typing dots give you away.
